Weekly Gear Grind Checklist

Weekly Gear Grind Checklist

Many of you have been asking about a “short list” of things to do once you’ve reached a point in current content where you can get into a weekly grind for gear improvements.  Here is a brief guide of what you can do, starting from the top of the gear ladder and moving downward.

Please note that this list assumes that you already have the legendary cloak (or are close to it), have mostly Throne of Thunder (522-530) gear on your character, and no longer need to run older Mists of Pandaria content.

Reroll Token Weekly Quest

Be sure to trade in your 50 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune for 3 Warforged Seals each week unless you already have 8+ Warforged Seals (the cap on this currency is 10 seals in your possession at one time) on your character.

These tokens allow you to reroll  for loot on completed raid boss encounters, giving you an extra chance at loot (or a chance at additional loot if you have already won something)!  They work on all Mists of Pandaria world bosses in addition to LFR, flex, and normal/heroic raid boss encounters!

Black Market Auction House

Everyone should check the Black Market Auction House for gear that is useful to them.  Often times, current content or heroic gear is available for purchase and this can be a quick way to gear up if you have the gold.

Faction Auction Houses / Crafted Gear

Everyone should check their faction auction houses for crafted gear that is an upgrade for them.  Currently, each profession can craft two, item level 553 tier 16 pieces (belt and pants slots) that are “bind on equip.”  These pieces are becoming less expensive on the auction house with more product availability on the server each and every week and are viable options until you can get drops from normal difficulty raids or world bosses.

World Boss Kill List

Legendary Cloak Holders
Ordos

Ordos drops warforged gear (item level 559), which is slightly better than standard tier 16 gear (item level 553).

Everyone (Including Legendary Cloak Holders)
Celestials

Although you can only loot one Celestial boss each week, their loot tables include tier 16 set piece gear (gloves and pants slots) that is item level 553 and includes your class set piece bonus attributes.

Valor Capping

Everyone should cap their valor points at 1,000 per week until they have 3,000 / 3,000 valor points (the current cap on this currency is 3,000 points in your possession at one time and 1,000 points earned throughout a single, weekly lockout period which resets every Tuesday morning).

Although there is no tier 16 valor gear, valor points can be used to upgrade items beyond their initial item level values.  Each item can be upgraded twice, with a single upgrade increasing the item level of said item by 4 levels.  Each upgrade costs 250 valor points, so fully upgrading an item will cost 500 valor points and raise the item level of said item by a total of 8 item levels.

Example: [Item Level 553] –> [250 Valor] = [Item Level 557] –> [250 Valor] = [Item Level 561].  Note that you are limited to upgrading a single item twice with valor points.  Valor upgrades are limited to “rare” quality items (purple) and those items that are derived from Mists of Pandaria loot tables.

Timeless Isle

The Timeless Isle has ample opportunity for a person to gear very quickly and includes a “free” piece of 535 (“timeless” tier) gear for exploring the island and completing its introductory quests.

By simply utilizing a farm guide for the Timeless Isle, you can collect a complete set of gear that is has an item level value of 496.

In addition, you may collect Burdens of Eternity to upgrade individuals pieces of gear that you loot from an item level value of 496 to and item level value of 535.

Example: For someone who is a Ret Paladin, [Timeless Plate Spaulders] = [Cliffbreaker Pauldrons] Item Level 496.

Example: For someone who is a Ret Paladin, [Timeless Plate Spaulders] + [Burden of Eternity] = [Cliffbreaker Pauldrons] Item Level 535.

Raiding

Looking for Raid

Looking for raid boss encounters currently drop gear with item level values of 528.

Flex Raiding

Flex raiding boss encounters currently drop gear with item level values of 540.

Normal/Heroic/Mythic Raiding

Normal difficulty raid boss encounters currently drop gear with item level values of 553 (tier 16) or 559 (warforged).

Heroic difficulty boss encounters currently drop gear with item level values of 566 (heroic tier 16) or 572 (heroic warforged).

Long Term Planning

Eventually, you will only need to kill Ordos and complete normal difficulty raid encounters to increase your gear and item level.  This usually occurs after defeating world bosses and flex raid boss encounters for a few consecutive weekly lockout cycles.  Until then, using the above weekly grind can help you to be well on your way.

When you have mostly upgraded item level 561 gear and warforged item level 567 tier 16 gear, you will then (of course) need to look for a raid team that completes heroic mode boss encounters.

Catching Up

Please note that, again, this list assumes that you already have the legendary cloak (or are close to it), have mostly Throne of Thunder (522-530) gear on your character, and no longer need to run older Mists of Pandaria content.

If you are still working on your legendary cloak, you should add running old Mists of Pandaria content to the list above, in addition to farming the Isle of Thunder and reputation with the Black Prince.  You should also be prepared to complete the single quests within the legendary quest arc that may include PvP activity and other world boss kills.
